XIth SCAR – Open Science Conference & Biennial Meetings: Antartic research

by Maria Piotto from IDEA (CONICET-UNC)

The SCAR Open Science Conferences (OSC) are the premier global meetings for Antarctic science, bringing together experts from a wide range of disciplines to discuss cutting-edge Antarctic research.

These conferences provide a unique platform to present the latest findings, stay informed about SCAR’s scientific activities, and explore future perspectives in Antarctic research.

The 2024 conference was held in Pucón, Chile, at the foot of the iconic Villarica volcano, offering breathtaking views of the Chilean Patagonia. This stunning setting provided an inspiring backdrop for scientific exchange.

Attending the OSC gave me the opportunity to engage with leading Antarctic scientists, exchange ideas, and expand my knowledge across diverse fields of study. It also allowed me to present the findings from my most recent research to the Antarctic scientific community.

Additionally, the conference facilitated potential future collaborations, which are crucial in the formation of an early career research. These interactions are proving invaluable for the development of my PhD, which focuses on studying of Antarctic benthic communities in a context of climate change. Overall, the SCAR Open Science Conference was a rewarding experience that not only enriched my understanding of current Antarctic research but also strengthened my professional network, contributing significantly to my academic journey.
