Exchange of expertise in the scientific analysis of (geo-) data using the programming language ‘R’

The primary objective of the secondment at Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh) in Valdivia was to facilitate an exchange of expertise in the scientific analysis of (geo-) data using the programming language ‘R’. During the CoastCarb meeting in Punta Arenas, Chile (October 17-21, 2022), substantial contributions were made to enhance the utilization of R for spatial data mapping and analysis.

A pivotal workshop titled “Mapping with R” utilized the ‘tmap’ package to instruct participants on creating publishable maps. This workshop addressed importing and projecting spatial data, and constructing both interactive and static maps. Attendees and the wider CoastCarb community were provided with extensive materials, including R scripts, markdown scripts, spatial sample data, and annotated HTML.

In addition, support was extended for the presentation of the ‘CRITTERBASE’ database, demonstrating the entire workflow from importing download files into R, converting them into spatial data points, to displaying these points on interactive maps.

The current development status of an R package for the automated download of sea ice concentration data from the University of Bremen was also showcased, highlighting ongoing progress.

These efforts collectively advanced the skills and resources available to the CoastCarb community and beyond, promoting enhanced capabilities in spatial data analysis and mapping using R.

Teaching materials, including a self-created R course, were shared with colleagues at Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh).

Working at the UACh in Valdivia, Chile, provided an invaluable opportunity to exchange knowledge about the analysis of ecological (geo-) data and explore the extensive possibilities that non-proprietary programming languages offer. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to network with colleagues from around the globe and would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Andrea Piñones and Ricardo Giesecke for their exceptional support, hospitality, and kindness, among many others who have also been immensely helpful.
