Antarctic macroalgae taxonomic composition and biomass

by Carolina Matula from Instituto Antartico Argentino, Argentina

The SCAR Conference Open Science is an internationally recognized event in the Antarctic scientific community, organized by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. This year the conference was held in Pucon-Chile in which 1500 scientists from all over the world participated.

Some of the themes addressed at the conference included polar climate change, biodiversity and conservation, the antarctic benthos, environmental drivers and ecosystem dynamics among others. The types of activities included Scar business meeting, workshops symposiums, poster session. Also social events such as the Conference icebreaker, Gala dinner and the Antarctic fest that allow colleagues to socialize with each other from a different point of view.

I had the opportunity to represent Instituto Antartico Argentino through posters. I presented a poster on long-term changes in macroalgae taxonomic composition and biomass in Potter Cove. I also participated in other posters in which I collaborated with collegues in other research projects.

This was the first time I participated in a Scar conference and also in an international event of such magnitude. These meetings (as the Scar conference and the Coastcarb meeting) allow to meet with colleagues from other parts of the world, to strengthen the cooperation and to plan new ones as well as to meet new ones. It also gives the opportunity to meet the senior researchers and the upcoming younger generation of researchers.
